The Acolyte | Review by: Gal Balaban
It saddens me that my most anticipated of the Star Wars series also ends up the most disappointing. Though The Acolyte is free of the thirst for nostalgia that made the other shows in the franchise feel safe, it fails to provide a spark of intrigue to its characters and conflict.
Amandla Stenberg provides a strong performance as Mae, whose unconfident but channeled rage stands out, but as Osha, her character feels failed by the script that can’t manage to create a consistent and lively protagonist. Lee Jung-Jae gives perhaps the best performance in any of these Star Wars Disney+ shows. Sol is an yet empathetic and honorable Jedi master in his intentions but also flawed in his conviction, which makes Lee profound to watch. Jodie Turner-Smith’s enchanting presence is painfully underutilized in a series inferior to her talent, and Dafne Keen is also enjoyable in her role.
The series does have one standout action scene in the middle, with perhaps one of the most badass Sith lords we’ve ever seen and exciting choreography. The show is unfortunately doesn’t stay true to its emotional hook in a way that feels earned. It’s a tiresome, inconsistent adventure that tries hard to have a bold darkness for Star Wars while keeping that heart and wonder that made us first fall in love with the franchise, ultimately offering neither.
2/5
