His Three Daughters | Review by: Gal Balaban

Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen, and Natasha Lyonne are all at their best in this cathartic and revealing comedy-drama about the messy love we inherit and forge forward. Through sad subject material, it remains warm, compelling, and deeply funny. Lyonne in particular is a scene-stealer and the way the three siblings must work to not only maintain themselves in the situation, but find a way to come closer together, is fascinating to watch thanks to its 3 main talents.

The fathers character invisibly looms over the sisters, but he also isn’t the cliche “abusive parent” we usually meet in these kinds of films. Jovan Adepo also shines and the writing is continuously engaging within the one-location structure, capturing the strange feeling of waiting to mourn and being comforted by people who may or may never have been strangers to you.

4/5
